Creating Communities of Wellness with Dennis Pullin
What you’ll learn:
Dennis Pullin, President and CEO of Virtua Health, emphasizes the critical role of health literacy and community-focused care in cutting costs and improving health outcomes.
In this episode, Rebecca speaks with Dennis, whose career in healthcare leadership highlights the power of informed consumers and the need for continuous learning. Dennis shares insights from his experiences, including Virtua’s development of “navigators” to guide patients through complex healthcare systems.
Dennis also highlights innovative projects like Virtua’s mobile grocery store, which tackles food deserts with the help of employee-driven solutions. His leadership approach is grounded in community engagement, teamwork, and being a supportive, approachable presence for both staff and patients.
“I’m in a position where I need to make sure people have the resources they need, the space they need, the talent that they need, to take care of our communities.”
“I don’t take care of patients, but what I can do is make sure that those that are taking care of our patients have everything that they need, and part of what they need is feeling valued. Part of what they need is knowing that they can go to work and work in a safe environment.”
“We are a community of people that is taking care of people.”
“The community that we are taking care of is us, it’s family members, it’s friends, it’s neighbors, you know, and so we are taking care of the very community in which most of our colleagues live. And so it is not us versus the patients, it is us taking care of us.”
“I think I have a responsibility to try and to create communities of wellness. As does my other counterparts. I think we have to take on that responsibility and in doing so, find creative ways to do that, we have to be innovative.”
“It’s about taking responsibility. It’s about finding the right partners. And it’s about deciding to make a change.”
“I do believe we have a responsibility to create these communities of wellness.”
“I learned the kind of leader I wanted to be from both some of the best bosses I’ve ever had, as well as some of the worst bosses I’ve ever had.I extracted the nuggets from both and I sort of created my own toolkit based on my exposure and my experiences.”
“I think it’s important for a leader to always be approachable and transparent.”
